A Portrait of Canberra and of Canberrans 1979-2012   Portrait of a People – the Tiwi of northern Australia

This beautifully crafted book has been published to celebrate the Centenary of Canberra, and 34 years of Heide Smiths photography of Canberra and Canberrans. It is, amazingly, Heides fifth book on Canberra, but it is the first one to include portraits and landscapes.
“The photographs in this book are inspired. Through a lifetimes commitment to her craft, Heide has portrayed both the monumental and official face of Canberra, but also that thing which so many fail to grasp, its humanity. Whatever the content, the style is artful; she has aimed for joy and beauty, and truly made her mark.”
Robyn Archer Creative Director The Centenary of Canberra
Portrait of a People is first and foremost a book of photographs taken by Heide of the Tiwi and of Tiwi life over a twenty year period, but it is more than just a picture book, in that it also relates the history, and describes the lifestyle culture and art of the Tiwi. From her first visit to the islands, Heide developed a unique relationship with the Tiwi, largely through her close friendship with an older, highly respected Tiwi woman; she is now regarded as Gerardines sister. Heide maintained a diary of her experiences with the Tiwi, and some of the stories of her adventures have been included.
