The Story behind the image - School outing
As fans of Gustav Mahler will be aware, Germans are great wanderers, or as we would say, hikers. The only difference is that German wanderers always sing, hikers only occasionally. The city where I lived in Germany until 1963, Hameln, is located in Lower Saxony at the northern end of the "Weserbergland" where the River Weser flows through a hilly region on it's way to the North Sea. The forests of the Weserbergland are well maintained by professional forestors, with numerous walks to choose from, in fact, it is like a backgarden for the people of Hameln.
It is used not only for school excursions - biology & zoology -virtual reality, but also family reunions, intrepid wanderers and by lovers. So you find restuarants and cafes, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. This shot was taken in 1956, when I was still an apprentice photographer, and my name was still Heide Soltsien.
