Fotoheide - A Labour of Love

In December 2023 at the age of 86, Heide had a second operation on her lower spine, which included fusion. It was not a success. Heide was in constant pain and could only walk with the help of a Walker. The ongoing need for pain killers affected her short-term memory, which in turn made using even Photoshop a formidable task.

So in late 2024 Brian started work on a book to be called “Fotoheide – A Photographers Tale”. It is the story of Heide’s fascinating and extraordinary career, from her first portrait in 1951, to her latest landscape in 2025. It also Brian’s tribute to a remarkable photographer.

At about the same time, Heide was approached by the Basil Sellers Exhibition Centre (BAS) in Moruya, to have an exhibition in their gallery. Thus “Heide Smith – A South Coast Selection” was born. When they learnt about the book, they suggested that we should combine the book launch with the exhibition, which will be held on Saturday June 28, at 10.30 am. Lt Gen John Sanderson will open the Exhibition, and Brian will launch the book.

In the following weeks we will post photographs and stories on our website heidesmith.com/blog/ and on a number of Social Media Platforms. The books should arrive in the next week or two, and will be on sale at the BAS, and after that on the website.
