Fotoheide - A Photographers Tale
In Germany, Heide is known as Fotoheide; in fact, the first ever book of her work in 1963, was titled “Fotoheide”. In Australia, her business name is Heide Smith Photographer. This is the tale of Heide Smith’s fascinating and extraordinary career, in black and white. She took her first portrait when she was 13 years old, and today, at the age of 87, she still takes photographs every day. Twelve books of her work have been published, and many more include her images, but this is the first to cover examples of all her work, and not just specific countries, cities, or people. From portraits of Governor Generals and Prime Ministers, Musicians and Sportsmen, Priests and Popes, to Beautiful Women and Brides, they are all in the book. Not forgetting Landscapes and Industrial Scapes from around the world. Plus, each of the 32 chapters is preceded by a brief background of the assignment. To quote Brian Rope in his review to the Canberra Critics Circle;
“This is a book which all Australian and German photo enthusiasts should have in their collection”.
