The first portrait that Heide Smith can remember taking, was of Onkel Albert at the funeral of her grandfather, in Neubruchhausen in Germany in 1951. She was 13 years old, and had only recently received the camera, an old Zeiss Ikon, as a Christmas present from her Onkel Hans”. Thus begins Chapter 1 of “Fotoheide – A Photographers Tale.”, a book by Brian Smith, Heide’s husband. (To avoid confusion, Heide’s pen name in Germany was Fotoheide).

About the Book

The following 31 chapters trace Heide’s career as a photographer, beginning with her apprenticeship in Hameln Germany in 1954 to the present day; 70 years later. The previous 11 books of Heide’s images have sold more than 35,000 copies: but they were always about specific locations, projects, people or events. The more than 200 images in this book cover all the major events in her career, from her first portrait in 1951, to her latest in 2023, including a number of the stories behind the images. All the images are black and white, Heide’s favorite medium.
