photographs of Tiwi village life
about Photographs of Tiwi Village Life: The Tiwi have lived on Bathurst and Melville Islands for about 50,000 years. Until 150 years ago they lived as hunter gatherers. The Tiwi Islands were a good choice; plentiful rain and warm sun produced abundant bush tucker. The surrounding sea was a never ending source of fish, clams and mussels, and was a natural defence against preditors. Today, they buy most of their food from the village store. Tiwi children attend school or college on the islands, and when they are not at school they play. Tiwi Aussie Rules teams are feared throughout the Top End. There are many more photographs of Tiwi Village Life in "Portrait of a People", which is still available in my bookshop. For more information on The Tiwi and Prices: see The Tiwi Collection
